Skills to Practice at Home:

Name Writing – Have your child practice writing his/her name using upper and lower case letters (i.e. Mrs. Tyrrell, not MRS. TYRRELL)

Rhyming --  You can play rhyming games anytime, anywhere. Play I Spy Rhyming, or just take turns making up rhyming words like bug, rug, tug, mug…the words don’t even have to be real, they just have to rhyme!

Sight Words Challenge your child to identify the following: I, a, is, see, the and my.

Letter Sounds – Help your child identify the beginning sounds of words, and the sounds that letters make.

Numbers – Can your child identify numbers 1 – 10 out of order?

Reading With Your Child

About each week your child will bring a simple paper book to practice reading with you. To make the most of this experience, encourage your child to do the following::

·        identify the book’s front cover and title.

·        know where on the page to begin reading the words (on the left side), and in which direction to read them (left to right).

·         point to each word while reading—this is a bouncing motion, not a sliding one. If your child has trouble with this skill (called “tracking”), you might try a technique called “piggybacking.” To do this, you point to each word with your child’s finger resting on top of yours and moving along with it.

·        use the pictures to help read the words.

·        say any letter sounds he/she knows to figure out words.

·        find any sight words he/she knows

·        Always stay positive and supportive! J

Please return books the following day; we’ll keep them in our book box.

Homework Corner

Refer to Weekly Homework Packet. Homework is due Friday (unless otherwise specified), but please turn in folder each day!

Please don’t forget to read with your child each night for 15 minutes!

This is an important part of our homework.
