Birthdays

In class, parties are not allowed; however, small treats are okay.  Any treats that you would like to share with the class must be store bought (school policy).  Please notify me ahead of time if you are planning to bring food.  He/she will wear a birthday crown, receive a birthday certificate and pencil, and we will sing “Happy Birthday” in class.  In addition to a sweet treat, I would like to suggest that you and your child consider a donation in honor of his/her special day.  Some ideas are a class book, game, puzzles, music cd, arts and crafts materials, etc.  All donated items will become a very special part of our classroom and are sure to be enjoyed over and over again.  Please note that you are never obligated to buy anything for the class.  For children who have summer birthdays, we will celebrate in June.

Labels

Anything that your child brings to school should be labeled with his/her name.  This can’t be stressed enough.

Clothing

Please dress your child in layers.  Open toed shoes or heels are not permitted because they are unsafe to play in.  Shoes and socks are highly recommended.  Please do not send your child to school in something that is not okay to get dirty.  Often times we paint, play hard, sit on the grass or blacktop, etc.

Conferences

Our first parent/teacher conferences will be held in December and then again in March.  Please take some time to fill out your conference availability.  The first report card will go out in November.

Academics

Each lesson given in our class is aligned with the California Content Standards for Kindergarten.  The standards are separated by subject area.  Please take a moment to read my End of Year Goals.  Read and sign the Kindergarten Expectations for the first trimester and return them to school ASAP.

Positive Rewards

I like to reward the children for their good behavior.  I give loads of verbal praise.  Other rewards are table tallies, parties, free time, park visits, etc.

Assertive Discipline

We use the traffic light.  This system has rules and consequences.

Green   =  doing fine

Yellow  =  warning with 5 minute time-out

Red     =  10 minute time out and note home

I like to encourage the children to be independent and make good choices.  Time outs happen occasionally.  I like to use them as a teaching and learning opportunity.  Example:  Do you understand why you had a time out?  What would be a better choice next time?

Communication
