NEWS! HELLO FALL! We
have had a great start of the year and we will continue to have a wonderful
time in first grade! In
September we learned about apples and rules. We were able to conduct a science experiment by stringing apple
rings along our wall and keeping some inside a baggie. We waited a week to
see what happened. Our hypothesis was correct! The apples on the string
turned brown and the apples in the baggie were mushy and moldy! We
used our five senses in our tasting apples experiment: touch, taste, smell,
sight, and sound (crunchy noises). We also made delicious apples sauce in
class! We
also learned about Johnny Appleseed in Social
Studies. He was a brave young man who traveled around planting apple
seeds so all people would have something to eat. We
have completed Chapters One (addition) and Two (subtraction) in our Math books and are beginning Chapter
Three: Addition and Subtraction together. Please practice both these concepts
with your child at home to reinforce the skills we are learning in class! OCTOBER This
month we will be studying many things: Social Studies/Geography: Christopher
Columbus’ journey to new lands Science: Season
comparisons, Spider anatomy, spider web comparisons, Owls and bats: habitats,
differences, etc., Pumpkins: experiment with seeds and life cycle of a
pumpkin. Math: Addition and
subtraction. We will also begin our timed
tests. They will have 3 minutes to complete 30 problems. First sheet is
all addition, second sheet is all subtraction, and the third sheet is a mix
of addition and subtraction! Writing: we will continue
to write everyday in our journals and we will begin to write comparison
paragraphs. Everyone is making great progress in all academic areas. If you
have time to help your child practice at home please let them read to you and encourage them to
sound out the words. Writing is
very important as well. Have them practice writing-it doesn’t matter what
they are writing about as long as their writing is legible and consistent. Math can be practiced at any time so
drill them on the way home, to school, to the grocery store, etc. A quick
“What’s 5+8?” will improve their skills. Thanks
to all the parents who have donated items to the classroom: YOU MAKE A
DIFFERENCE!!!!! J |
